Fake Reviews Can Get Your Real Ones Paused. 0 of 18 Guides Say So.
(正文为英文,方便在 Google 上被本地客户搜到。)
Google lists five reasons a review goes missing, and only one of them needs you to do anything that day. Two mean wait a few days. One means a sentence to one customer. One means the review is gone for good. The fifth, Google temporarily disabling reviews on a profile, is the one to understand in 2026, because in July a Google spokesperson said its systems respond to suspicious reviews by “temporarily pausing reviews on the profile”, and owners hit with fake reviews watched their real ones disappear too.
I read the 18 guides that rank on page 1 for google reviews not showing up and google reviews disappeared on 2026-09-24. None of the 18 mentions that July wave or Google’s statement about it. Four mention reviews being disabled at all: one points to the 2020 pandemic, one to 2021, and two tie it mainly to a policy violation on your side. None says that somebody else’s fake reviews can put your real ones out of sight.
What does Google itself say causes missing reviews?
Google’s help page, About missing or delayed reviews, ranks second for this search, under the AI Overview. Page 1 stretches the list to 7, 8, 12, 13 and 15 reasons. Google’s own list is five, plus one tip. Here they are in Google’s words, with what each one asks of you.
| Google’s reason | Google’s wording | What it looks like | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Still being checked | “In some cases, this process might take a few days” | A new review has not appeared yet | Wait a few days |
| Recent merge | “it might take a few days for reviews from both profiles to display” | You merged two profiles and the count looks short | Wait a few days |
| Older phone or software | “We recommend they update their Maps app to the latest version” | One customer says they posted and it never appeared | Pass that sentence to the customer |
| Policy violation | “Reviews removed for policy violations won’t be restored” | Specific reviews that were live are gone | Stop spending time on it |
| Reviews disabled | “Google might temporarily disable user-created content, including reviews, for certain Business Profiles or business categories to protect business owners” | Most or all reviews gone, and new ones not appearing | Check whether it is only you (below) |
| Tip: after reinstatement | “Sometimes reviews might be removed after a Business Profile is reinstated. If this happens, contact support” | Your profile was suspended, came back, and the reviews did not | Contact support |
The same page says reviews are being removed and disabled for schools primarily categorised as educating students aged 6 to 18. That does not touch a service business, so I leave it there.
What happened to Google reviews in July 2026?
On 2026-07-03 Search Engine Roundtable reported an influx of complaints in the Google Business Profile forums. Owners said their listings were hit with fake reviews and, shortly after, all their reviews disappeared and no new ones were being added. One owner is quoted saying the count went from about 4,651 reviews to 63 within about 24 hours. Amy Toman, quoted in the same piece from LinkedIn, described listings getting “a review block” after fake or spam reviews were reported.
Then Google spoke. A Google spokesperson told the site: “When our systems detect suspicious reviews, we take a range of actions including removing reviews and temporarily pausing reviews on the profile to prevent further abuse. We are investigating the issue and will restore any reviews that were incorrectly removed.” An update on the article, again via Amy Toman, says Google reported the issue resolved and “all missing reviews should now be visible.”
Keep the parts separate. The fake-review pattern comes from owners in the forums. The pausing and the promise to restore mistakes come from Google. Put together, they give the fifth reason on the help page a shape you can recognise: a burst of reviews you did not earn, then your real reviews gone, then new ones stuck.
Is the “February 2026 API bug” still a reason?
The highest-ranking vendor guide for this search lists “The February 2026 GBP API Bug” as its second reason, then says in the same section that counts dropped “in late 2025” and that “efforts to fix the issues are ongoing.” Its own FAQ dates the bug to October 2025.
The trade record points to October 2025. Search Engine Roundtable wrote it up on 2025-10-27, quoting a forum post about reviews lost between 13 and 17 October. The article’s update quotes a 17 December 2025 post by Joy Hawkins: Google “just confirmed that it should be fixed now.” From 13 October to 17 December is 65 days. So that bug was reported fixed nine months ago. If your reviews went missing this month, it is not your explanation, and waiting on a fix for it is waiting on nothing.
How do I find out which case I am in?
This takes about ten minutes, and the point is to end it knowing whether you have anything to do.
- Write down two numbers. Today’s review count on your profile, and the last count you are sure of (an old screenshot, a monthly report, an email from Google). Missing = old count minus today’s. Screenshot today’s profile with the date.
- Name the pattern. (a) One or two new reviews have not appeared. (b) Specific older reviews are gone and new ones still appear. (c) Most or all reviews are gone, or nothing new shows up.
- If it is (a): wait a few days, which is Google’s own figure. If one customer’s review still has not appeared, pass on Google’s sentence about updating the Maps app. That is the whole job.
- If it is (c): open the Google Business Profile Community and search missing reviews. If you see a run of posts from the last few days describing the same thing, it is not only you. Screenshot, note the date, and stop there. In both waves on record, the fix came from Google’s side.
- Check the last 30 days. Did you merge profiles? Were you suspended and reinstated? Did reviews arrive from people who were never customers? Did you report a batch of fake reviews? A merge means wait. A reinstatement means contact support, which is Google’s own instruction. Fake reviews followed by your real ones vanishing is the July 2026 pattern: raise it once through support with your screenshots and dates, then leave it.
- If it is (b) and none of the above fits, assume a policy removal. Google says those “won’t be restored.” Close the tab.
What not to do: ask customers to edit or re-post their reviews to “wake them up.” That trick circulates on forums, Google does not document it, and it puts you in the middle of a customer’s review.
Do missing Google reviews come back?
Google has given two answers, and they apply to different cases. The help page: removals for policy violations “won’t be restored.” The July spokesperson: Google “will restore any reviews that were incorrectly removed.” Both mistaken waves on record ended with Google saying it was fixed. Correct removals do not come back. Nothing you can pay for moves a review from one column to the other.
When does this stop being your job?
Once you have done the ten minutes above. After that, re-checking the count every evening does not change the outcome; it only spends the evening. If you want to know what your replies to reviews do and do not do, Google’s own words on that are in Google does not say replies lift ranking.
If the review count is one of several things that follow you home at night, that is worth counting properly, as in how much of your week is admin work. For a second pair of eyes on which of those jobs should stop reaching you at all, the free AI Work Audit takes about five minutes and ends with a 15-minute call if you want one.
Common questions
Why are my Google reviews not showing up?
Google lists five reasons on its own help page: the review is still being checked (“this process might take a few days”), you recently merged profiles, the customer used an older phone or older software, the review was removed for a policy violation, or Google has temporarily disabled reviews on your profile or category. It also notes reviews can go missing after a profile is reinstated.
Can a fake-review attack make my real reviews disappear?
It did in July 2026. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Roundtable that when its systems detect suspicious reviews, it takes actions including “removing reviews and temporarily pausing reviews on the profile.” Owners in that wave reported real reviews vanishing after fake ones arrived. Google said it would restore reviews that were incorrectly removed, and later said the issue was resolved.
Will my missing Google reviews come back?
It depends on why they went. Google’s help page says “Reviews removed for policy violations won’t be restored.” When Google removed reviews by mistake, it has said the problem was fixed: for the October 2025 wave and for the July 2026 wave. Nobody can promise which case you are in.
How long does Google take to fix a missing-review bug?
Google publishes no timeline. For the October 2025 wave, the first forum reports quoted by Search Engine Roundtable covered 13 to 17 October, and the update saying Google had confirmed a fix was dated 17 December: 65 days from 13 October. For the July 2026 wave, the resolution date was not stated.
Should I ask customers to edit or re-post their reviews?
Not as a fix for a missing review. Google does not document that as a remedy. The one case where you say something to a customer is when a single review never appeared at all, and then the sentence is Google’s own advice: update the Google Maps app.
